Administrative correspondence, 1940-1977.

Series 7-8 of record group RG 80-27 consist of correspondence of the Michigan Reformatory at Ionia, Michigan. The first series of records is administrative correspondence (1940-59, 1963-74, 1976-77). Consists mainly of letters in, carbons of letters out, and memoranda between associates in similar work, personnel doing related work in other states, Michigan governmental departments, and the public. The second series of records is executive correspondence (1944-58, 1962-68, 1970-71). Consists mainly of letters in, carbons of letters out, and memoranda to directors and commissioners of the Department of Corrections. Content relate to policy, procedure, rules, approved and denied requests, responses to recommended programs, meetings, facilities, and like administrative affairs.

The Michigan Reformatory (also known at times as the Michigan State House of Corrections and Reformatory) was established by law in 1887 in Ionia, Michigan. It was closed on December 31, 2001.
